Shepherd of the Hills Historic Homestead Tour

During the day, you can hop on a jeep-drawn tram for a guided tour of the homestead.

Your tour guide will take you to beautiful Old Matt’s Cabin, the original home of the main character’s in Harold Bell Wright’s book, The Shepherd of the Hills. The log cabin stands in it’s original location, and is on the National Historic Registry.

It’s not hard to understand why Harold Bell Wright decided to camp atop what would become known as Inspiration Point.   The second highest point in Southwest Missouri boasts views that extend all the way to the Boston Mountains in Northwest Arkansas on a clear day.  It is here that Harold Bell Wright penned his notes for what would be come the 2nd most widely ready book in publishing history.  Experience the breathtaking views from the hillside where he camped and see the statues of the main characters from the book located on the point.

As the tour leaves Inspiration Point, you’ll travel down the mountainside to the site of Old Matt’s grist mill. The Old Mill Theatre was carved into this wooded setting over 50 years ago. You’ll be able to step on the stage of the popular Branson show for a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the nightly performance and learn how some of the amazing special effects are achieved.
